Developer eyes Texas Gulf Coast for $4B renewable fuels plant

The Houston-based U.S. subsidiary of a Chilean energy company is considering spending billions of dollars and creating at least 100 jobs with a renewable fuels plant in Matagorda County, on the Texas Gulf Coast. Project Helix would use some form of renewable power — like wind or solar — to create green hydrogen, which would be mixed with carbon dioxide, producing up to 200 million gallons per year of methanol, liquified petroleum gases, gasoline or aviation fuel, according to an incentives application. A final decision is expected in 2022.
